Potato is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Solanaceae family and is the fourth most important food crop in the world. Global production in 2016 was 377 million tons.
Potatoes grow in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions. They are cool crops, and the optimum temperature is 14-24°C.
Potatoes like fertile, well-drained, well-watered, deep sandy soil or sandy loam soil, and the optimum pH range is 5.5 - 6.5. Avoid stagnant water and saline-alkali land. When the soil EC is higher than 1.7 dS/m, the yield will decrease.
Regarding ridge cultivation, the general plant spacing is 0.15-0.45 m, the row spacing is 0.9 m, the sowing depth is 5-10 cm, and the seeds are sown at a low temperature of 3-16°C.
